Part 3 of the “Building Money-Making AI Apps” Series
What’s up! Rock here. Whether you’re following our AI app series or just landed here looking for technical setup guidance, I’ve got you covered. Today, I’ll walk you through setting up everything you need to start building your AI app. No fluff, just practical steps that actually work.
Choosing Your Tech Stack (Without Getting Overwhelmed)
When I built my first AI app, I spent weeks just deciding what tech to use. Big waste of time! Here’s what’s actually working for me in 2025:
Frontend Options (Pick One):
- React + Next.js (My Go-To)
- Perfect for AI apps with real-time features
- Great performance out of the box
- Huge community for help
- Flutter (For Mobile-First)
- If you’re targeting mobile users primarily
- Works great for both iOS and Android
- Better performance than React Native in my tests
Backend Choices (Pick One):
- Python + FastAPI
- My personal favorite for AI apps
- Super fast and easy to work with
- Great for handling AI model interactions
- Node.js + Express
- Perfect if you’re already doing JavaScript
- Tons of AI libraries available
- Easy to find developers if you need help
Setting Up Your Development Environment
Let me walk you through my exact setup process:
1. Basic Development Tools
# For Windows users:
# 1. Install WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux)
wsl --install
# For everyone:
# 1. Install Node.js and npm
curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.39.0/install.sh | bash
nvm install 16
# 2. Install Python and pip
sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3.10 python3-pip
# 3. Set up virtual environment
python -m venv ai-app-env
source ai-app-env/bin/activate
2. AI Development Essentials
Here’s my requirements.txt
for Python projects:
fastapi==0.100.0
uvicorn==0.22.0
python-dotenv==1.0.0
openai==1.2.0
numpy==1.24.3
pandas==2.0.2
scikit-learn==1.2.2
3. Database Setup
I use MongoDB for most AI apps. Here’s why:
- Flexible schema (perfect for AI app data)
- Great free tier
- Easy scaling
Quick MongoDB setup:
// Basic MongoDB connection
const mongoose = require('mongoose');
require('dotenv').config();
mongoose.connect(process.env.MONGODB_URI, {
useNewUrlParser: true,
useUnifiedTopology: true
});
AI Model Integration
Here’s how I integrate with OpenAI (my go-to for most apps):
from openai import OpenAI
import os
from dotenv import load_dotenv
load_dotenv()
client = OpenAI(api_key=os.getenv("OPENAI_API_KEY"))
def get_ai_response(prompt):
try:
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-3.5-turbo",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt}],
max_tokens=150
)
return response.choices[0].message.content
except Exception as e:
print(f"Error: {e}")
return None
Security Essentials
Don’t skip these – I learned the hard way:
- Environment Variables:
# .env file
OPENAI_API_KEY=your_key_here
MONGODB_URI=your_mongodb_uri
JWT_SECRET=your_secret_key
- Basic Security Middleware (Express):
const helmet = require('helmet');
const rateLimit = require('express-rate-limit');
app.use(helmet());
app.use(rateLimit({
windowMs: 15 * 60 * 1000, // 15 minutes
max: 100 // limit each IP to 100 requests per windowMs
}));
Setting Up Your Project Structure
Here’s my go-to project structure:
ai-app/
├── frontend/
│ ├── components/
│ ├── pages/
│ └── utils/
├── backend/
│ ├── models/
│ ├── routes/
│ ├── services/
│ └── ai/
├── .env
└── docker-compose.yml
Common Setup Problems (And How to Fix Them)
- CORS Issues
// Backend (Express)
app.use(cors({
origin: process.env.FRONTEND_URL,
credentials: true
}));
- Memory Problems with AI Models
# Use streaming responses
def stream_ai_response(prompt):
try:
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-3.5-turbo",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt}],
stream=True
)
for chunk in response:
yield chunk.choices[0].message.content
except Exception as e:
print(f"Error: {e}")
What’s Next?
Once you’ve got your environment set up, you’re ready to start building! In our next post, I’ll show you how to actually build your app’s core features.
Pro Tip: Test your AI model integration with small requests first. It’ll save you money and headaches!
