Part 2 of the “Building Money-Making AI Apps” Series
Hey again! Rock here. In my last post, I got you all excited about building an AI app. Now, let’s talk about what you’ll actually need to make it happen. I’ve wasted thousands of dollars on unnecessary tools when I started – so you don’t have to!
Finding Your Sweet Spot in the AI Market
Before we dive into tools, let’s figure out what you’re gonna build. When I started, I tried to create a “do-everything” AI app. Big mistake! Here’s how I now help my friends find their niche:
- Look for Specific Problems Last month, my friend Tom noticed that real estate agents struggle with writing property descriptions. He built an AI app just for that – now making $2,000/month. The more specific, the better!
- Check the Competition I use these free tools to research:
- Google Trends (my favorite for spotting rising opportunities)
- Product Hunt (to see what’s already out there)
- Reddit (seriously, subreddits are goldmines for user problems)
The Tools You Actually Need
Free Tools That’ll Get You Started
Let me share my starter toolkit that won’t cost you a dime:
Development Essentials
- VS Code – My go-to code editor
- GitHub – For storing your code (plus, their Copilot feature is a game-changer)
- Postman – For testing your APIs
AI and Machine Learning
- OpenAI API (free tier) – Gives you enough credits to test things out
- Hugging Face – Amazing for trying different AI models
- TensorFlow Lite – If you’re building something for mobile
Design Tools
- Figma (free plan) – For designing your app interface
- Canva – For creating quick marketing materials
- Unsplash – For free images that don’t look like stock photos
Premium Tools Worth Your Money
Look, I’m usually pretty cheap with tools, but these are worth every penny:
Must-Haves
- Cloud hosting (AWS/Google Cloud/Azure) – Start with free tier, budget $50-100/month later
- A proper AI API subscription – I spend about $100/month on OpenAI now
- Domain & SSL – About $15/year (seriously, don’t skip this)
Nice-to-Haves
- MongoDB Atlas – $9/month for a proper database
- LogRocket – $99/month for tracking user behavior (I waited until I had paying users)
Setting a Realistic Budget
Here’s my monthly budget when I started:
- Essential Tools: $50
- AI API Credits: $50
- Hosting: Using free tier
- Marketing: $100
- Total: $200
Now I spend more, but this was enough to get my first paying customers.
The Skills You Need (And Don’t Need)
Let’s be real about skills:
Must-Have Skills
- Basic Python or JavaScript (pick one to start)
- Understanding of APIs
- Problem-solving mindset (trust me, you’ll need this!)
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Basic UI/UX knowledge
- Understanding of prompt engineering
- Some marketing sense
Don’t Need Right Away
- Advanced AI/ML knowledge
- Perfect coding skills
- Expert-level anything
Your Action Plan for Next Week
Here’s what you should do before my next post:
- Pick your niche (use the research methods I mentioned)
- Set up your development environment
- Create accounts for the free tools
- Set your initial budget
Common Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To)
- Buying every tool upfront – Start with free tiers!
- Ignoring version control – Set up GitHub from day one
- Not tracking expenses – Created a mess at tax time
What’s Coming Next
In our next post, we’ll dive into the technical foundation – choosing your tech stack and setting up your development environment. I’ll show you exactly how to set everything up, even if you’re starting from scratch.
Got questions about any of these tools? Drop them in the comments! I had to learn all this the hard way, so I’m happy to help you avoid my mistakes.
